Recently I was asked about how Twitter is different from Facebook. This question seemed very simple to me to answer. However it forced me to write this post and review more deeply the present status and role of both these social media networks.
I am not a pioneer who is the first in comparing the above mentioned social networks. After a quick Google search anyone can find dozens of articles, blog posts and analysis about them. I like the comprehensive analysis “Twitter vs. Facebook” made by Diffen with charts, stats, history, financial data, and a bunch of related links to sources. But if you like more simple comparison, here is a link to Yahoo Answers forum with the best short explanation, as for beginners.
From my point of view, since their launches – Facebook in February 2004 and Twitter in July 2006 – they keep their initial business and service models practically unchanged, just enriching them with new elements of functionality and convenience, improving design and privacy protection.
Here is my view on Facebook service model. This is the multi-functional social networking platform for connecting and keeping connection with those who you think belong to your circle of communication or interest, which offers opportunities of communication and entertainment.
My impression about Twitter is in the following definition. This is a social messaging and networking platform for letting others know about what you do and think via short updates.
That’s why (on my mind) it’s absolutely logical and right that members of Facebook circle are called “friends”, but members of Twitter circle are called “followers”. On one site you keep up closer, more intimate mutual relationships with your audience (at least you have this opportunity), while on the other site these interrelations between people are like in public places.
Following this logic, we can call Facebook environment as a home environment and Twitter environment as a public environment.
