All the social Web was overwhelmed in the middle of June when Facebook finally unveiled its long-term awaited hashtags. Beginning June 12, 2013, the social media giant began to hyperlink all hashtags in posts to its search results for the hashtagged word.
As it is known, a hashtag is a word or a phrase prefixed with the symbol
#. It is a form of metadata tag. They help in grouping messages by topic or interest, since one can search for the hashtag and get the set of messages that contain it. Now at least 15 prominent social networks use this form of tagging. The pioneer in it was Twitter in 2007.
The significance of hashtags for ordinary Facebook users is in the grouping their messages and greater networking by interests. In just a week after this tool was introduced, I saw its great effectiveness on my FB page – 1,369% growth in weekly total reach !!!
For marketers this is the easy tool to reach the target audience. As a social media marketer serving clients in real estate and roofing I was surprised by the rapid growth in reaching the target audiences. Here are my proofs:
